Bead Application Guide for AquaBeads® and NutriBeads® to Support Early Poultry Performance

This bead application guide covers AquaBeads®, AquaBeads® X, AquaBeads® Organic, NutriBeads®, and NutriBeads® X—ready-to-use hydration and nutritional supplements designed to improve early poultry performance by encouraging feed and water discovery right at placement. To maximize effectiveness, it’s essential to apply the correct amount and spread it evenly across starter feed.

Determine the Right Dose

The amount of beads you’ll need depends on bird type, flock size, and the number of application days. Use the table below as a general starting point, then adjust based on your specific conditions and management goals.

Poultry Species Suggested Serving Size (g/bird/day) Approximate Birds per 34 lb Pail
Turkeys (poults) 1.0 – 2.0 g 8,000 – 12,000 birds
Broilers 1.0 – 1.5 g 8,000 – 12,000 birds
Broiler breeders 1.5 – 2.0 g 6,000 – 8,000 birds
Pullets 1.5 – 2.0 g 6,000 – 8,000 birds

Each 34 lb pail contains 12,000 grams of usable beads. The birds-per-pail ranges above assume a single day of application; multi-day programs will require additional pails.

Turkeys are commonly placed on a multi-day application program, with beads applied daily for the first 2–3 days to support hydration and early feed discovery.

Actual application rates should be adjusted based on bird condition, management practices, and environmental factors such as temperature, placement stress, and overall flock health. For help dialing in the right rate, number of days, and product formulation (AquaBeads®, AquaBeads® X, AquaBeads® Organic, NutriBeads®, or NutriBeads® X) for your operation, connect with your ClearH2O sales representative or distributor before finalizing your program.

Bead Application Instructions

Bead products are shipped in brine to keep them moist. This article outlines instructions for draining the brine from the pail. Then you’re ready to apply:

  1. Wear a clean glove or use a slotted spoon to scoop the drained beads.
  2. Sprinkle the beads lightly over the starter feed trays or directly onto feed on papered floors.
  3. Distribute evenly so the beads are spread out rather than piled. This ensures chicks or poults can access both feed and beads simultaneously without crowding.

Over time, moisture in the beads can evaporate, so the beads are most effective when applied no more than a few hours before birds are first placed.

Correct Application: Beads are visibly spread out and easy for birds to find.

Incorrect Application: Beads are clumped into piles, resulting in uneven access.

Monitor and Reapply as Needed

Depending on activity level, stress, and environmental conditions, beads can be reapplied daily for the first 1–3 days, especially in turkeys and other higher-risk placements. Consistent bead application and even distribution help ensure beads remain effective and accessible to all birds.

Applying beads correctly at placement is a simple yet powerful way to support early bird performance. With just a few minutes of preparation and the right application technique, you can help your flock start strong—supporting hydration, encouraging feed intake, and setting the stage for better growth outcomes.
