Instruction Guide: How to Modify a Scotts® Drop Spreader for AquaBeads® Application

AquaBeads® are a ready-to-use hydration and nutrient supplement designed to improve early feed discovery and support chick health at placement. Modifying a standard Scotts® Turf Builder® Classic® Drop Spreader allows for faster, more uniform application across starter feed on feed paper in large broiler barns. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you convert the spreader for AquaBeads use.

Materials Needed

  • Scotts® Turf Builder® Classic® Drop Spreader
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Dremel or utility cutter

1. Remove Factory Spring Pin

Use needle-nose pliers to remove the small spring pin that control the gate. Lift the gate to expose the narrow opening at the base of the hopper.

2. Modify the Drop Slot

Using a Dremel or utility cutters, carefully cut open the slot across its length. This allows AquaBeads to flow through evenly. Leave a few small sections in tact so the plastic framing maintains integrity.

3. Clean and Reassemble

Once the slot is widened and smooth, reassemble the spreader. Close the gate and reattach the spring pin.

4. Drain AquaBeads in the Spreader

Pour a pail of AquaBeads into the spreader and allow the brine to drain. This process should take about a minute.

You're Ready to Roll

Now that your drop spreader is modified and the beads are drained, you're ready to roll them out on paper. We recommend using level 10. This setting has been field-tested to ensure the appropriate flow rate for AquaBeads over papered feed.

Here's how it should look when properly applied:
